A Whole home air cleaner is more efficient and is much better at removing impurities in air you breathe than multiple individual room air purifiers.   Central heating and cooling systems blow a supply of air through a system of ducts to every room of your home.  Individual room air purifiers will clean the air in one room but the air from the rest of the house continues to enter that room anyway.

When a home is heated in winter and cooled in summer, the fan in your furnace or air handler re-circulates the air already in your home. That means air borne pollutants and particulates are constantly being recirculated.  Cleaning that supply of indoor air becomes important for many health and economic reasons.

whole home air cleaner is attached to the return duct, where the circulated air re-enters your furnace / air handler. The reason for placing it here is that the air entering has been through your entire home, picking up air borne dust mites, pet dander, smoke, allergens, pollen and dust from all rooms of your home.

As the installation of a whole home air cleaner  requires some reconfiguration to your air ducts, it is best done by an HVAC professional.  An AirPlus certified, licensed and trained service engineer can insure that the unit is installed according to the manufactures recommendations and code requirements in addition to operating at peak efficiency.  An AirPlus certified licensed and trained service engineer is also an expert with air ducts, furnaces, energy recovery ventilators (ERV/HRV’s), humidifiers and thermostats and can ensure your whole home air cleaner is installed correctly and will not interfere with other parts of your heating/cooling system.

What are your “Clean Air” Requirements?

Does your family have health concerns?  Season allergies and Asthma are becoming more common health conditions and many indoor air quality issues can compound these health concerns.

A MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is an industry rating scale that identifies the size of particles an air filter can remove from your indoor air.  The higher MERV rated filter is more expensive as it contains more filtering materials.  The common 1″ disposable filter has a MERV rating of 3 or 4.  It will filter larger particles but is designed to protect your FURNACE from dust.  It is NOT designed to clean your indoor air.  A MERV rated filter of 8 or above will filter most of the particulates 3 to 10 microns in size.  Human hair is 100 microns in width.

  • MERV 8 Filters:  Capture 90% of air borne particles 3 to 10 microns in size including pollen, mold spores, dust mites, pet dander.  Rated “Better Residential”
  • MERV 10/11 Filters:  Capture 95% of air borne particles 3 to 10 microns in size including pollen, mold spores, dust mites, pet dander. Rated “Better Residential”
  • MERV 12/13 Filters: Capture 95% of air borne particles 1 to 10 microns in size including the above plus finer dust particles including lead dust from paints in older homes and legionella.  Rated “Superior Residential”
  • MERV 15/16 Filters:  Capture 98% of air borne particles .3 to 10 microns in size including all above plus bacteria, tobacco smoke, virus.  Rated “Superior Commercial/Hospital”

To be classified as a “True HEPA”, a HEPA filter needs to filter 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns in size.  HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air.  These filters were developed in the 1940′s for the Manhattan Project  to control radioactive elements being released into the air.  Since then, they have been used in hospitals and clean rooms where extensive filtration is necessary.

Changing the filters in your whole home air cleaner or cleaning the electronic cells in your electric air cleaner is   unit or cleaning electronic cells is also important to understand and a professional installer can educate you on the proper procedures.
