It’s cold outside! This is one of the most important times of the year to have a properly functioning gas furnace to keep your home comfortable during these extremely cold temperatures. Here are some helpful tips from the Service Engineers at AirPlus Heating & Cooling to prevent your gas furnace from breaking down while it is working to keep your home comfortable and warm.
Extreme Cold – Home Heating Tip #1: Lower the temperature on your thermostat by 1 – 2 degrees. In doing so your furnace will not have to work as hard to keep your home warm. The average household usually sets their thermostat between 21- 23 degrees C, by lowering the set point on your thermostat by 1 – 2 degrees you will help keep your furnace running.
Extreme Cold – Home Heating Tip #2: Check your Furnace Filter and replace if necessary. Regardless of the time of year, you should replace your furnace filter regularly to prevent accumulation of dust, debris and other particles, which makes your furnace work harder than necessary. During periods of extreme cold, your furnace will run longer than it usually does which could result in a faster accumulation of dust, debris and other particles.
Extreme Cold – Home Heating Tip #3: Keep Exhaust Vents Clear. High efficiency gas furnaces, boilers and tankless water heaters are usually vented through a PVC pipe just above ground level. If this vent is blocked either through an accumulation of snow or ice it could result in your gas furnace, boiler or tankless water heater not functioning properly. Always check your vents and ensure they are clear!
Extreme Cold – Home Heating Tip #4: If you are experiencing difficulties with your gas furnace not being able to deliver the desired temperature you set your thermostat to, then you might consider using a space heater as a temporary solution, then call AirPlus Heating & Cooling, we can help you resolve your heating issues or recommend a high efficiency gas furnace replacement that not only delivers the desired comfort but helps save you money on your utility bills.
