Staying Warm and Safe During Extreme Winter Weather

Furnace repair technicianIt’s almost Christmas, and we have already seen our first snow fall for the season. Winter storms are not only inconvenient; they can be dangerous if you are suddenly without heat either from your furnace or boiler.   At AirPlus Heating & Cooling we’d like to share a few tips for staying warm and safe during a extreme winter weather.

  1. Protect your pipes:

When the temperature falls significantly below freezing, remember to turn on the faucets in your home ever so slightly, so that only a small, tepid drip is coming from the spout. This keeps water moving through the pipes and protects them against freezing. Simply having to thaw your pipes can be time consuming and costly, and having to replace a burst pipe can be expensive!

  2. Prepare for power-outages:

A heavy snowfall can quickly and easily damage a power line. When the power goes out during a winter storm, it is important to be prepared to be without electricity for an indefinite period of time. Stock your pantry with non-perishable foods and bottled water. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit, flashlights, candles, and extra batteries handy in an easily accessible location. Keeping a battery-powered radio and extra blankets on hand is a good idea, too!

  3. Care for your furnace or boiler:

It’s never good when your furnace or boiler breaks down, but it’s especially bad when it breaks down on the coldest day of the year. We can’t stress just how important it is to have a service engineer perform routine maintenance for your furnace or boiler. A trained and certified technician can spot a damaged or worn component during a maintenance visit, as well as perform minor repairs before they become major problems.  A furnace or boiler works hardest during extreme weather conditions. By keeping your furnace or boiler operating at its best, you can count on your furnace or boiler when you need it most.
